Non-profits are more dependent on the generosity of online donors than ever before. As an executive pastor of a church in the United States, I am keenly aware of this reality.

But these online platforms can create a deep lock-in effect that makes it incredibly risky to move to a competing platform. If we switch systems, will our donors follow us to the new one? How much work will it take to set up? How will we communicate what’s going on?

During 2023, our church switched online giving platforms and not only did we retain all our existing donors, but we saved $10,000 in fees and a ton of staff time in the process. It was the second time I’ve overseen this kind of transition in a decade. And it went great.

Today, I’ll share why we transitioned, who we switched to, and the steps we took to help all our donors shift from one platform to another.
